By my count we did 32 trails this year over 3 states.  Failed to do reviews for 3 of them.....maybe this week.
Some awards:
Scariest: Midway Wicked Woods
Best hayride:  Midway Wicked Woods.  Fireworks, fireballs, and chainsaw wielding clowns with a clown car.
Best screamer: Runner up:  Midway Wicked Woods

My Number One:  Midway Wicked Woods.  It just works start to finish for me year after year after year.

Two words: mannequins and lasers.  Gets me every time!  Midway is a really intense haunt, and it's got the scares to go with it.  It's also got such a wide variety of different kinds of scares that it's sure to find the one that gets to everyone at some point. Also, the setting of a KOA campground is really the 12th man here as the trail leads you deeper and deeper into the woods as you go, and the creepiness goes up right along with it!  The scares do throttle back a bit toward the end of the trail, but I do appreciate the complexity of the maze and the start of the haunt is so intense I always kind of appreciate the cool down effect a bit!

Actors: 3/5
Great monsters throughout the trail!  As I said before, there are a wide variety of environments along the way, and that means a lot of different kinds of monsters as well, and they were certainly up for the challenge.  I'll be honest though, I docked points because of the queue line experience.  Over the last few years that area has started to drift into a much angrier environment than it used to be.  The hayride and insane clowns were always my favorite part of this haunt, but there's definite line between Triumph the Insult Comic Clown which is what you want and a guy who's just yelling at you while you're trapped there.

Set Design/Props/FX: 5/5
Love the sets here, and I think it's really great the way one scene drops right into the next one.  You have to get way deep into the trail before you have your first walk without a monster on you, and those usually have a chainsaw or two waiting on you!  There's just so much to see!  Plus, Midway has the very best vortex, I think.  The sets are so good here, I didn't even mind getting whacked in the face by a giant spider!

Length: 5/5
Super long trail!  I always feel like I've just finished a hike by the end of it.  They really use their environment, and you really get deep in the woods around the campsite.  Great length!

Value: 5/5
$24 regular or a $31 fast pass.  That's on the high side, but this is a really premier haunt.  I think it's a terrific experience, so I'd still call it great value at that price. $2 for parking in addition.

Overall: 4/5
Top 5 haunt in the state every single year!  Midway is just one of the best.  Relentless actors, beautiful design, perfect setting…it's got everything you're looking for in a haunted attraction.  It's the perfect blend of old school and new school approaches to a spook trail, and I think they nailed it again!  Definitely recommended!

Year after year Midway continues to terrify me.  It all starts with a tractor ride to the haunt entrance which seems harmless at first.  That is until it is bombarded by a crazy clown car and suddenly the wagon is invaded by clowns.  These are not your average creepy clowns but super charged angry clowns that want to eat your soul.  Luckily for me most of these clowns stay near the front of the trail.  The remainder of the trail is nothing to be taken lightly though.  You never really know what to expect walking through these woods.  I got an unsettling feeling as I walked further and further down into the woods as I knew the  Midway creatures were waiting for me. It's a dark, long, self guided trail with all of their old favorite scenes and many new ones.  Midway doesn't rely on one source for its scares.  They equally combine actors, props, animatronics, and nature to expose your fears.

Actors  4/5
These are a tough set of actors.  There were a couple actors here and there that didn't attempt a scare or simply achieved a pop scare and receded back into hiding but most actors very intensely stalked us. They are in your face and invading your personal space kind of folks.  If you show fear they will swarm to you and stick to you like glue.  There will be no escaping their torture at this point.  You've made them aware you are scared and now you are at their mercy.  They do not care if you scream, pee, cry or beg they will not let up.  The clowns are brutal, sometimes to the extreme.  Actor numbers were plenty and well spaced throughout the trail.  What I saw of their makeup and costumes looked impressive but I tried not to look at most of them for fear if I made eye contact they'd come for me.  I can not stress enough how aggressive and in your face these guys are.  They are there to scare you and they will give it all they've got to make that happen.

Set Design/Props/Fx:  5/5
I was impressed with the changes I saw from last year.  With that said some of the things I saw have possibly been there for years and I've just not seen them.  I keep my eyes closed and ears covered a lot because they scare the pee outta me.  The clown cave always looks amazing, especially in 3D, and I don't recall seeing an actor in there in years past so that was an added surprise and scare. Walking up to the gas station with a zombie outbreak in the middle of the woods was striking. The whole scene was so realistic and detailed.  I had a hard time telling what was a prop, animatronic, mannequin, or a real actor.  They use a lot of decoys and it works beautifully to confuse and disorient people.  Animatronics don't simply pop out and scare you they attack you.  One group member was trapped inside a giant spiders legs while the spider held onto his head. The maze is very dark and in years past could be followed by holding on to the walls but this year you just might get shocked if you try that little trick. Watch out for squishy floors and falling walls.  They've added a hellavator that is fun but needs a bit more power.   The vortex, while not scary, is always a fun little ending to a long and terrifying trail.

Length:  5/5
It's a longer trail that will leave you tired, scared,  and ready for a rest but with pitch black maze you could be here all night.

Value:  4/5
$24 is on the higher end for area haunts but they do give you a good scare for your money.  They offer special pricing for kids and have fast pass tickets available for an additional fee.

Other:
Parking is $2 a car.  They offer concessions at the end of the trail.  I didn't partake in the snacks but my friends had fried pickles, french fries, and from what I heard some pretty amazing fried oreos.

Overall Impression:  4.5/5
Midway knows how to scare and will push every button they can to make you scream and possibly pee yourself.  The clowns will haunt me forever.  This is not a trail for the faint of heart because they do not show mercy to the weak but prey on them.  Being separated from my group was horrifying but luckily I have good friends who came back to find me.  Whatever you do stick with your group otherwise you're own your own to find your way through the wicked woods.  Well you're not all alone.  There are plenty of monsters, creatures, and don't forget clowns to keep you company. We were sent through in a small group of three so we had a lot of actor interaction and were able to see all the props with ease.  Smaller groups always improve the scares. Visiting Midway Wicked Woods has always been a tradition for our group.  They continue to put on a good show and this year was no different.  Their goal is to scare the hell out of you and that's exactly what they did.

Scare Factor: 4/5
Midway doesn't ease you into anything.  The innocent looking hayride introduces you to the devious looking clown car.....and some chainsaw wielding clowns.  The first house is the most intense section of scares of the attraction.  Actors seem to materialize from anywhere and everywhere and props are triggered left and right.  Scares continue at a high level through the movie cinema set.  The scare factor dips, just a tad, on the outdoor trail.  I found a few actors who just couldn't sell the scare and settled for screaming or a pop scare with no follow through.  A very solid scare, however, has been added to the 3D area as well as in between the maze and the vortex.

Actors: 4/5
Midway has no bare areas; it's sufficiently staffed from top to bottom.  The hayride assault clown squad is excellent- they cause mayhem with the best of them and make sure that all riders get a little face time...or chainsaw time.  The upper queue line actors are a bit lacking this year.  Instead of scary, witty, or humorous they settle more for rude and insulting.  The actors in the house up the intensity level and can truly sell the scare and will pursue the frightened. This doesn't hold true throughout the trail, though, as some actors have a hard time selling the scare.  Some simply stand and stare at you and there's way too much just guttural screaming.  After the initial pop scare / reveal they seem to not follow through well.  That being said, the chainsaw actors have their role down pat and they handle their weapons convincingly and mercilessly.  Also a special mention needs to go to the actors in the 3d area.  They held their reveal well and then scampered around with malicious glee.  Good job guys!

Sets/Props/Fx: 5/5
Don't let Midway's location at a semi-rural campground fool you.  This place has some fantastic props and sets.  The clown car has been upgraded to a glow in the dark beast of a machine that tailgates the hayride leading to further mayhem.  The initial house now features a hellavator along with some great animatronics/pneumatic props.  You never know what is going to vibrate, scream, or launch itself at you.  I always enjoy the laser tunnel before being funneled outside with dummies trying to confuse you as to who is alive.  Beware the launching spider if you are of average to above average male height! I was captured for a good fifteen seconds....  The outdoor trail doesn't let down on sets and props.  A variety of buildings feature macabre set pieces with the occasional amazing prop (ie hanging man animatronic).  The 3D is excellent and the long black maze now has a "shocking" new addition.  Costumes seemed notably better this year.  I can't remember seeing the mask and jeans effect at all.  Midway manages to successfully merge the traditional wooded walking "spook trail" with the bigger modern haunted attraction.

Length: 5/5
Plan on a minimum of thirty minutes to traverse the trail.  There is a queue line at the ticket booth for the hayride portion and then a queue line after the hayride / merry go round section.

Value: 4/5
Tickets have increased to $24 per person.  You get a lot of bang for your buck, though, with a short hayride, an action packed initial house and then a long walking trail and maze.

Other:
Parking is $2.  After the trail there is a concession stand with multiple options as well as reasonably priced T-shirts.  I can vouch for the fact that the fried oreos are delicious.

Overall: 4.5/5
Midway Wicked Woods is a perennial favorite and an odd hybrid of the traditional North Carolina "spook trail" and a higher tech haunt.  One moment you're strolling through a maze of wooden palettes and the next moment you're dodging vibrating caskets and looking at a 6 foot tall animatronic prop.  It combines the best of both worlds into a trail that will leave you sweating, screaming, and smiling.  From the clown car to the merry go round to some bloody sets Midway Wicked Woods is a visual treat.  You'll have to crouch down, watch out for aerial spiders, you might get wet, and may get shocked.  It's a full sensory experience!  Be sure to check out this fantastic haunt this October!

One thing that Midway has always made perfectly clear is that they are there to scare the hell out of you, and this year was no different. That was made very apparent before ever entering the first house, as screaming_diana will no doubt attest. From the moment you first encounter the signature Midway clowns you’ll be surrounded on every side by monsters and chainsaws galore. We were sent through as a group of 3 and that size group works perfectly for the in your face scares Midway has to offer. Most actors here don’t settle for easy scares and will follow you through multiple sets to make sure they have had their fun with you. I heard multiple people screaming from the cue line all the way through until the end. Admittedly the intensity does drop off towards the end of the trail in some scenes, most notably the 3D area and the zombie gas station. If the actors there were a little more aggressive and in your face than this rating would no doubt be a 5.

Actors:  4/5
The actors have always been the driving force of the Wicked Woods and once again they proved why. The clowns were the stars of the show and they really made sure to torment all of the frightened customers in the line area as well as in the first house. Improvisation is used very well here for the most part and most actors will be more than happy to engage in some verbal back and forth with you. There were a few parts where the actors seemed to let off the gas a bit and not really interact much, however they were in the minority and the rest were all energetic and clearly reveling in the screams. Special shout outs go to Smiley the clown, the girl in the school bus, and a certain clown at the beginning who wields a chainsaw like no one I’ve ever seen. Also the actor in the maze singing about Stevie Wonder had all of us in tears from laughter.

Set Design/Props/FX:  4/5
Midway has always had a backwoods charm to it that is reminiscent of the slasher days of old. They have kept that feeling to it all these years and this year as well, even with some very noticeable improvements in the sets. The gas station was probably the most standout new addition and the outside of it looks absolutely amazing. The clown car has also received an upgrade, and although I’m personally fond of the original design the new design is definitely one of the best props around. There is also a new demon girl prop that will certainly take you by surprise, and trust me when I say you will get a very close look at it. The clown merry-go-round from last year was great again this year, as well the hospital room in the first house probably being my favorite set at Midway. The Woods have never looked better and you can certainly tell that a lot of work, hours, and heart go into the design of the trail.

Length:  5/5
Midway is a longer haunt and I believe it took us around 45 minutes to complete, from the time we got on the tractor until we walked out of the end.

Value:  4/5
Tickets cost $24 this year with fast passes available for $31. While the price is a bit on the higher end Midway makes sure that when you’re done you feel like you’ve received a great experience for your money.

Other:
Parking costs $2. They also have a great concessions area with made-to-order food (I recommend the fried oreos), drinks, and some merch to remember the trip by.

Overall:  4/5
Midway Wicked Woods has been a tradition of mine for a very long time and is a staple of the NC haunt scene. Year after year they continue to show why they have the reputation that they do. They love to scare and they know how to do it well. You’ll be harassed by clowns, run from more chainsaws than you can count, dodge a horde of zombies, and try to feel your way out of the ever confusing blackout maze. Although there were bits where it felt less intense than years past, Midway is still one of the most reliable haunts in the state for a solid scare. Midway is a must for any avid haunt goers list, so make sure to attend while you can.

Midway Wicked Woods has been my number one for several years running and are geared to take that spot again this year.  It's intense, fun, and at times downright beautiful.  Take a minute to glance through the woods at the neon sets ahead of you or glance backwards at Michael Myers standing backlit in the fog with a knife and his head cocked sideways.  I got chills.  The actors can be downright relentless and the props are both amazing but well placed and utilized appropriately.  The whole thing is like a little haunted wonderland tucked away right off the highway.
If you attend with a large group of friends split up going through the haunt.  Take the wagon ride together, stand in line together, but go through the trail in smaller groups.  If you go through as a large group you’re certain to miss a lot of scares.

I screamed, cried, urinated on myself, and ran off the trail multiple times but I survived.  I found myself crawling on my hands and knees, hugging the ground, and praying the chainsaws surrounding me would soon run out of gas.  This haunt continues to impress and terrify me year after year.  The vortex ending could possibly use one final scare but by the end I’m not sure I could have lived through anything more.  I left exhausted, traumatized, and proud that I survived another year at Midway Wicked Woods.

Now I must admit that I do have a pretty long history with Midway Wicked Woods. I’ve been a customer since I was around 11 or 12 and was involved with the trail for a few years. This being the first year that I’ve had no involvement at all I was a bit worried that some of the magic would have gone away since I have seen behind the curtain so to speak. This was absolutely not the case and they managed to surprise me and deliver scares and entertainment that I did not see coming. Midway is an old-school spook trail and in my eyes exactly what a haunt should be: scary.

The absolute gold standard for haunts in NC, hands down.  But whether you end up liking it as much as I do, I think most anyone will agree that it's one of the scariest, most fun, and well planned haunts around.  I really like a lot of trails in the area, and there are definitely some that are better at one aspect or another than this one, but whenever anyone asks me which haunt to start with, I always say Midway.  It's just what you're wanting when you think you might want to check out a spook trail.  If you haven't been, you should absolutely go!

Overall: 5/5 - Midway is the best haunt in NC in my opinion. Granted, I haven't been to every haunt in NC but I've been to a lot of the best. I left Camp Fear previously feeling like it was a good experience, and then this completely blew that out of the water. Midway continues to impress me, every year I go. The actors this year just seemed so brutally evil, so brutally awesome. The scares here are very consistent and in your face. They had me jump a few times. I always have a great time at Midway, and I am never disappointed. If you go to one haunt in the year, go to Midway Wicked Woods. Do not miss this one, it's very fun, very evil, very scary, very entertaining.

Man I'm tired.  I accompanied screaming_diana on all those trips.   By my count 20 of the 37 were first time visits  We didn't have a single rain-out which is just amazing.

Wanted to give a gigantic thank you to NC Haunts for selecting me for the review team- would not have been able to do this crazy schedule without that position!  Also a thank you to all the haunt owners and actors- I can only imagine the time, expense, headaches, and heartaches y'all experience each year.

I've done some "awards" in the past and will list some here.  As always realize that experiences and opinions are subjective- to each their own, your mileage may vary, etc, etc.

My Top 5 of the season.

1.  Midway Wicked Woods
2.  Hacker House
3. Xtreme Fear
4. Major Graham's Haunted Mansion
5. Aberdeen Fear Factory

Best clowns: Midway Wicked Woods
Best hayride: Midway Wicked Woods

Scare Factor: 5/5 - It was great, yet again this year. Nothing will beat the hayride from hell, ever. It's a nonstop onslaught from the time you step on that wagon until you you walk out the vortex tunnel at the end. It has a very creepy, campy feel driving up to it. You are off the beaten path at a KOA campground off the main road. They have a nice atmosphere in the first queue area. Then, you get on the hayride from hell and the real fun starts. You wait in a second queue area, while being harassed by clowns and 2 or 3 of them have chainsaws, until some go back to terrify the newcomers. You go in, and traverse through many buildings, woods, and the new 3D clown section, with many scary animatronics, props, actors, and lots of chainsaws until you come out of the exit. It's a great time from start to finish. It's simply - great.

Actors: 5/5 - The actors here always bring their A-game, this year especially. The costumes and makeup were a LOT better this year. The actors had more energy, there were better delivered scares, less chainsaws but still a lot to live up to the Wicked Woods expectations. It has a real campy feel, the actors really deliver and make you feel like you shouldn't be there. They do a great job of interacting and entertaining the "victims" in the queue line and throughout the trail. There were a LOT of AWESOME actors this year, that really made it it's best year yet.

Set Design/Props/FX: 5/5 - Great this year. The new 3D clown section, the bus, snake tent, everything was all new this year and great. The school bus especially was AWESOME. It was straight out of a Jeepers Creepers set - very original in a haunt and very fun. The 3D clown section was awesome to. And of course, the maze...oh that maze. This year we knew the right-hand trick, but it was still long and unnerving. Everything was great.

Length: 5/5 - I started the timer on my phone, and it took us 1 hour from the time we got on the wagon till we walked out the vortex at the end, and it was horrifying every last minute. It's a non stop onslaught of terror. There are no dead spots - it's all jam packed with actors. Even the wait is fun with clowns tormenting scared guests. It's really a great time. It's definitely long enough to justify paying $20 for it. Great - simply great.

Value: 5/5 - With it being over an hour long, and feeling like an eternity, Midway Wicked Woods is worth every penny. Put this haunt in a big city like in Ohio or Pennsylvania, and they could be charing $35-40 instead of $20. It's worth every penny - it's definitely one of the best, if not the best, haunted trails in NC. Nothing can beat the campy, old-school feel but with new styled props and actors. It was great all around and I would pay more than $20 to go here, honestly. If you have never been, you need to go as soon as possible. You still have 11 nights to go! So get yourself out there and meet the clowns!

Overall: 5/5 - This is honestly the funnest haunt in NC. They don't boast or anything on there website, which they easily could. I think if they got more publicity and owned up to them being one of the best in the area, they could have 3 times as many people, being one of the only good haunts in about a 20 mile radius, minus Camp Fear, they could have a HUGE crowd. We got there around 7:30 and were the 2nd trip of the night. They open at 8 and are always ready to go. If you are within a 2 1/2 hour driving distance from Midway, it is definitely worth the trip. This really needs to be a yearly destination for all haunt enthusiasts. Check them out, you won't be disappointed.

Other - Parking is free, that's always a plus. It looked like the concessions were good and reasonably priced.
